5Beautifully styled, light weight and powerful battery pack that is ideal for smart phones!
By jjceo (jjceo@comcast . net)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2HPE6VA5CP99N This is a beautiful product for anyone who travels or works long days. You can charge your smart phone while on the bus, train, and plane or in a meeting without looking for one of those hard to find wall plugs. This powerful battery pack can charge your smart phone multiple times or extend the use of your smart tablet. (Please see the details listed below in my test results)

It is beautifully designed, extremely thin, small and portable. This is a Lithium Polymer battery cell and it uses a Grade A power cell which will provide years of recharging capability, up to 500 plus times. The battery pack has the power storage of 6000 mAh. It has a standard USB port and a built in Micro USB cable (3.2 inches long) that can both output 5VDC at 1 AMP each, simultaneously. It can charge two devices at the same time. My testing reveals that this battery pack is powerful and effective with the capability of outputting 4813.36 mAh of its charging capacity which is 80.2 percent of its rated capacity which is an excellent result.

What I like is that the unit is priced well and it is so small and portable but can really carry a lot of power. It easily fits into your purse, briefcase or pocket. Since it is only 0.47 inches thick (12 mm) it can easily slip into a jacket pocket for easy access. You could recharge most smart phones over 3 times with this power cell. The battery pack is about the same size as an iPhone 4. It weighs in at 5 3/8 ounces and it has a matte finish that helps you to grip it and it does not show fingerprints. I have included a video of this review and I hope it is helpful to you.

When I test a battery I do an extensive set of tests that fully charges the battery and then I use it to charge devices and make sure that it is fully depleted when my tests are done. I time each test and document the results as the test progresses. I then calculate the mAh of capacity that the battery supplied and I then calculate its charging efficiency. This process takes from 3 hours to, in very large batteries, about a day for testing. I don't take any short cuts or guess and every battery has these tests performed on it and documented. This is to assure that the battery is tested and it performs well. If a battery has performed poorly I then run the tests again to verify the results.

What's in the box?
* The Anker 6000 mAh black battery pack
* The battery pack comes with an instruction manual
* The battery does not come with an AC wall charger. Use the Micro USB charging cable that comes separate with the unit for charging the battery. You can use a computer USB 2.0 port to charge the battery pack but it is 6000 mAh and it will take between 10 to 12 hours. The manual states to use a 1 Amp USB wall charger and it will take 5 to 6 hours but I recommend using a 2.1 amp AC wall charger if you have one.
* One charging cable for the battery pack or your smart devices. It is 12.3 inches long.
* An Apple 30 pin connector adapter.

Anker® Astro Slim3 6000mAh:
* Powerful 6000 mAh capacity
* The unit is compact and weighs in at 5 3/8 ounces.
* Very attractive design, which is thin, small and lightweight.
* It has 4 LED status lights located on the front that indicate the battery charge level. When you unplug the stored micro USB cable the LEDs will come on. One flashing LED means less than 25%. One LED on and one flashing means 25 to 49%, two LEDs on and the third blinking means 50 to 74%, three LEDs on and the fourth blinking means 75 to 99% and all four on means 100%.
* When charging a device the LEDs stay lit showing the amount of power still stored in the battery pack.
* The battery pack has a nice matte surface that is attractive and does not show fingerprints.
* There are two power outputs and one is a USB port and it is rated at 5 VDC at 1.0 Amp and the other is a built-in Micro USB cable that is 3.2 inches long and rated at 5 VDC at 1 Amp.
* You can charge two devices at the same time.
* The battery pack has an automatic on feature to start the charging process for your device and it will automatically shut off when your device is fully charged. It is ideal to unplug your device when done charging to protect the long term life of the battery pack and your device's battery.
* Uses Lithium-Polymer battery technology.
* The battery pack can be recharged 500+ times
* Warranty is 18 months
* The unit is powerful and it has an attractive price.
* It is thin enough to fit into a shirt pocket, purse or into a jacket pocket at .472 inches thick (12 mm)! It is highly portable and beautifully designed.

Test charging an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4 to measure the output capacity:
iPad 2 @ 36% - charged overnight -
* In the morning 100%
* 64% x 6944= 4444.16 mAh

iPhone 4 @ 21% - Anker 1 led flashing
* 30 min 47% battery dead
* 26% x 1420= 369.2 mAh

Summary of test results:
* 4444.16 mAh + 369.2mAh =4813.36/6000= 80.22% capacity which is an excellent result!

Limitations of device charging:

* iPhone 4 battery 1,420 mAh battery capacity
* iPhone 4S battery 1,432 mAh battery capacity
* iPad 2 battery 6,944 mAh battery capacity
* iPad 3 battery 11,560 mAh battery capacity
* Kindle Fire battery 4400 mAh capacity
* Kindle Keyboard battery 1750 mAh capacity
* iPhone 5 is 3.8 VDC at 5.45 Wh = 1434 mAh battery
* iPad 4 battery is 11,486 mAh 3.7 VDC at 42.5 Wh
* iPad Mini battery is 4490 mAh at 3.72 VDC 16.7 Wh

You have to consider the losses in the charging circuits of both the battery pack and the device you are charging. Energy is lost during the voltage conversion, used by the electronics of the battery pack and your device and by the generation of heat. Losses are typically 30% of the batteries capacity.

Anker® Astro Slim3 6000mAh Real World Charging:
* iPhone 4 or 5 approximately 3.39 full charges out of a fully charged battery
* iPad 2 approximately 69.3% of a full charge
* iPad 3 or 4 approximately 41.6% of a full charge
* iPad Mini approximately 107.2% of a full charge
* Kindle Fire approximately 109.4% of a full charge

* A normal estimated usable storage is 70% of capacity or .70 * 6000 mAh = 4200 mAh charging capacity available for your electronic devices.

* In my testing I was able to use approximately 4813.36 mAh of capacity or roughly 80.22% of the 6000 mAh capacity. This is an excellent result.

This is an excellent product and deserves a 5 star rating. I recommend it to you.

I received a sample product for evaluation and I promised to provide a fair and honest review.

4iPhone 5 needs to use USB A output port (not built-in micro USB cable with adapter)
By Mor
Just received my Anker Astro Slim 3 and I like it overall. Below are just some pros/cons.

Pros:
1. Decent size; slightly larger than my iPhone 5 and weighs about the same.
2. Nice design with rubberized edges for easy grip.
3. Simple operation; no buttons. Charge the unit via the input port and four LEDs indicate the charge level.
4. Automatically blinks the LED indicators when the built-in micro USB cable is unplugged from the unit.

Cons:
1. The built-in micro USB cable cannot charge an iPhone 5 using a micro USB-Lightning adapter.
2. Need to unplug the built-in micro USB cable to access the unit's charging input port.
3. Wish there was a button to turn on the LED indicators instead of unplugging/replugging the built-in micro USB cable.
4. Wish there was a carrying case since I now need to carry a mini Lightning cable around with it and the built-in micro USB cable is useless.

3Unfortunately Did Not Work
By Steve
I ordered 2 of these chargers and unfortunately had to return them. I had high hopes for this since I have a friend who uses the Slim2. I'm sad to say that one of the units stopped working the first day. It would not charge and was totally unresponsive even when plugged in to a power source. The other charger worked sometimes but other times just wouldn't turn on to charge. I did contact Anker and they were kind to offer replacements but in the end I just didn't have the confidence in this product to try another one. It's a great concept and design except for the micro USB cable. I think most people will have to remove their cases to use it. Hopefully, my bad experience is one of a very small few.

UPDATE 9/11/13:
Anker contacted me and offered to send me another unit of theirs to try. I now have the Astro Slim 2 and it's given me a very consistent performance. Their commitment to making me a satisfied customer is top notch and can't be beat. As a result, I'm adding another star to my rating.
