This battery pack is a real powerhouse of energy and in my test results it performed extremely well in supplying a charging current to an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4. It is also designed to allow you to charge two items at the same time. I also tested the battery pack charging and iPad 3 and an iPhone 4 simultaneously. It comes with an Apple 30 pin connector and other accessories that you need to make it more useful. You may need to use your original charging cables for some devices so take them with you if you need them.
It is a great power resource to keep your USB recharged devices operating on those long work or school days or while you are traveling. This battery pack is a powerful source of power and many people like me are power users of their smart phones and tablets and need a battery like this. If you are constantly using your phone or tablet then you know that they will run out of power sometime during the day or evening. If you are not near an AC wall outlet with your charger or in your car with a charger what can you do? It is especially important to have some way to recharge if you are traveling in a plane, in the middle of a school classroom or on a bus or train. When I test a battery I do an extensive set of tests that fully charges the battery and then I use it to charge devices and make sure that it is fully depleted when my tests are done. I time each test and document the results as the test progresses. I then calculate the mAh of capacity that the battery supplied and I then calculate its charging efficiency. This process takes from 3 hours to, in very large batteries, about a day for testing. I don't take any short cuts or guess and every battery has these tests performed on it and documented. This is to assure that the battery is tested and it performs well. If a battery has performed poorly I then run the tests again to verify the results.

As you can see the Anker Astro 2 second generation 9000 will fully charge a totally dead iPad 2 but not an iPad 3 or 4 because it contains 9000 mAh of capacity. You have to consider the losses in the charging circuits of both the battery pack and the device you are charging. Energy is lost during the voltage conversion, used by the electronics of the battery pack and your device and by the generation of heat.

Excellent external battery with incredible customer support

I have been using my iPhone as a GPS with the Gaia GPS app while I have been in the backcountry, and decided that an external battery was a must for extended trips. I also decided that I wanted a backup battery for our iPad when we travel with our kids. I had a hard time deciding what mAh rating I needed, but wound up deciding to go with 9,000 because it will charge my iPhone 4s six times (the 4s has a 1,432 mAh battery) and my gen 1 iPad nearly twice (5,400 mAh).
After looking at all sorts of batteries and reviews on Amazon I decided to call Anker's customer service number to try to get a recommendation. I wasn't expecting much, but was very pleasantly surprised when I reached a U.S. based customer service representative who was extremely helpful. She discussed the pros and cons of the various models I was considering, and wound up recommending the Astro2. About a week after my purchase I even received a follow-up e-mail from Anker letting me know that they are always available to provide support which just capped off a level of customer service that is rare today.
The battery itself appears to be very well made. It has a nice rubberized coating and comes in a padded mesh bag. The included micro USB cable and 30 pin adapter work well with my iPhone 4s, but those with Lightning devices will have to use their own cable. It is a about the diameter of a pack of cards but a little thicker, and has no buttons. The led charge indicator is not visible unless you shake the battery to wake it up, and is in the form of a segmented ring. All in all I like the design very much.
I would recommend this to someone with needs similar to mine, or would recommend other Anker models to those with different external battery needs based upon the quality of the products as well as customer support.

Good Battery - Cool Micro USB to 30 Pin Apple Adapter

The Anker Astro2 battery is a decent battery with a nice form factor and a soft exterior. The battery capacity (9000 mAh) is on par with others of this size. It includes an interesting accessory I like a lot.
In the world of battery packs, it is the little things that separate these devices. The first thing to look at it is capacity and price. This is a 9000 mAh battery in a medium sized package. That capacity is pretty good, but not remarkable. I was able to charge my first generation iPad from completely dead to 100%. There was no more battery capacity left to charge anything else. Given charging efficiencies and the energy required to get to a 100% charge, this is exactly what I would expect from this battery). In other words, the battery pack's full tank of gas is a 1st or 2nd generation iPad (about 7000 mAh battery. Newer iPads will get less capacity. The estimate of three iPhone charges (the iPhone battery is more or less the same size across the board) is pretty good. The slippery slope is price, $45 at this time is a little bit on the expensive side for this much capacity. There are battery packs that include more features, maybe a little less capacity, are more compact, and are less expensive.
I like the shape of this battery pack. The rounded sides are nice. The rubberized material it is coated with is nice. There is no on / off switch, the battery pack is essentially always on. There are two USB ports cryptically labeled Smart and Universal. The Smart port is used for high amperage devices like an iPad. The battery does charge my iPad at the high charge rate (this is a very good thing, not all battery packs do this). For an iPhone you can use either port. The unit is charged with a micro USB plug. It took a very long time to charge using a MacBook Pro port. The unit does not come with an AC adapter. Any USB power adapter will work. If you want this to charge reasonably fast, use a high amperage (like the kind for an iPad) adapter.
Anker used a unique charge status led on the battery. The case is perfectly black when not in use. The moment it is plugged in or shaken, a segmented LED circle lights up. The percentage of the circle lit up is the percent charge on the battery. There are more segments than most batteries, so the percent charge is measured more finely - but I still prefer the battery with a real live number on the display. I'm not sure I understand why a shake to light function was added to the light. It is cute but kind of wasted technology really. When the battery is fully charged, the circle flashes slowly, the instructions say the light goes out.
The battery does not do pass-through charging. In other words, when the micro USB port is plugged in to charge the battery, you cannot use the outputs to charge a device. A lot of newer batteries allow pass-through; it is a convenience I like. It may sound like nit picking in a way, but at night I can plug the battery into an AC adapter or USB port on my computer, then plug my phone into the battery. In the morning, both my phone and the battery will have a 100% charge.
Included in the box is something I've never seen, and I got a little excited about it, a micro USB to Apple 30 pin adapter. The adapter is for charging only, it will not carry data. But still, this is a cool little piece; in theory I only have to carry one cable to charge my phone and the battery. There is a nice mesh bag for the battery along with a short micro USB cable in the box.
Overall, this is a nice battery. I can double the battery life of my iPad or charge my iPhone 4 up several times. The battery has a nice shape with the rounded edges. If I break this down to price per capacity (mAh) this battery is a little bit pricey. If I'm looking for an iPad battery, this is a good one. If I'm looking at charging my phone, I want something thinner, and more pocket able, with only one or two full phone charges in it.
